A Dinosaur Space for My Son

I’ve been on a cleaning kick since my husband went back to work after the holidays. It started with cleaning and reorganizing my son’s room. Digging through toys, figuring out the best layout and then the fun part, redecorating. Redecorating seems like a strong word because we’re living in an apartment, but I wanted to put upgrade his room from his nursery so we decided on a theme that fit a few pieces in his room already: Dinosaurs in Space.

Now nothing in stores really has the very specific theme of Dinos in Space, but Target’s line Pillowfort has both dinosaurs and space themes so we’ve kind of just pulled a little from each of those sections. My favorite item we found was a space themed bedspread that has little planets and rocket ships on it.

We decided that we’re getting rid of our guest bed concept and giving our son a Queen size bed. What 2 year old needs a Queen bed? Well, my 2 year old for starters. This kid is already over 3 feet tall, or at least he was at his last wellness check appointment. He’s just so dang tall.

On top of the bedspread we found both a rocket and a dinosaur wooden night light that would fit the theme super nice. My son ended up choosing the rocket, but I think either would’ve been perfect. Along with a space rug we picked up from Costco years ago, dinosaur toy boxes, the only pictures of Dino’s wearing space helmets we could find and few paint it yourself Dino knickknacks it’s the perfect room!

Gratitude.

For Christmas my mother in law got me a gratitude journal, and by Christmas I mean New Years Eve because that’s when my husband actually got off for the holidays. So, on the first of the year I started writing three things I was grateful for everyday. At first it started off with easy things like family time, finding out I was pregnant or getting the living room picked up, but today was the first day I felt like I really had to dig deep.

My son was sick this morning. Sick as in change my shirt, the bed sheets and clean the blankets out in the living room sick. On top of it all I had a doctor’s appointment to go pee in a cup to confirm I was pregnant because apparently I’m not competent enough to pee on a stick right. Usually, my son would just stay home with my husband and I would run to the doctor’s office for my 3 minute lab appointment, but when he’s sick he’s a level ten clinger. So we loaded everyone up in the car, puke only landing on the front porch and garden and headed to the hospital.

On the way there I was hoping to get in with the pediatrician so we could just make it one whole trip and not worry about having anyone wait in the car, but no appointments until hours later. I peed in my cup, grabbed some food for my husband and I and headed home. Just to pack up and go back to the hospital after my son had magically started feeling better.

We wait in the pediatrician’s office for what feels like forever. My son hating every second he wore a mask, but we made it and turns out it wasn’t anything but a stomach bug.

I didn’t feel like I had much to be grateful for today. I was exhausted from driving to and from the doctor’s office, puked on multiple times and pretty much had to fight with my son the whole time we were at the pediatrician’s. Then I dug deep.

My son has always been a go, go, go kind of kid. He’s never in the same spot for more than five minutes, but today, I got hours, hours, of cuddling and hugs from him today.

There are times when I have to wait three or more days to see my pediatrician. They’re always too busy for same day appointments, but today I got in and have peace of mind going to sleep tonight.

Even though I was exhausted after doing everything today, I still took down Christmas, got a load of laundry (sheets) done and my husband put up my new shelves and family pictures. Today was productive.

All days have something to be grateful for.
